about Ho Chi Minh city

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is the largest city in Vietnam and a bustling economic and cultural hub. It’s a vibrant mix of old-world charm and modern energy, where French colonial buildings stand alongside sleek skyscrapers. The city is famous for its chaotic-yet-charming traffic, street food culture, and lively markets.

History and Culture

  • Early beginnings: The area now known as Ho Chi Minh City was originally part of the Khmer Empire and called Prey Nokor. It became part of Vietnam in the 17th century through southern expansion.

  • French colonial era: In the mid-19th century, the French colonized the area, naming it Saigon. It soon became the capital of Cochinchina and developed into a key administrative and economic center, with French architecture and Western influences that are still visible today.

  • 20th century & war: After the French left in 1954, Saigon became the capital of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured the city, leading to the reunification of Vietnam. The city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in honor of the revolutionary leader.

  • Cultural identity: Ho Chi Minh City is a melting pot of influences — Vietnamese traditions, Chinese heritage, and Western colonial legacies. You'll find ancient temples next to modern skyscrapers, bustling street markets beside chic cafes, and a community that celebrates both traditional festivals like Tet and modern pop culture.

  • Religious and artistic life: The city is home to Buddhists, Catholics, Cao Dai followers, and more. Artistic expression thrives through traditional music, contemporary art galleries, and live performances. The food culture, deeply tied to history and identity, is one of the city’s strongest cultural pillars.

Geography

  • Location: Ho Chi Minh City is situated in southern Vietnam, about 80 km (50 miles) from the South China Sea, along the Saigon River.

  • City structure: It’s divided into urban districts (like District 1, the main commercial and tourist area) and suburban/rural districts (like Cu Chi and Can Gio). Thủ Đức City, within HCMC, is an emerging center for technology and innovation.

  • Climate: The city has a tropical climate with two main seasons:

    • Rainy season: May to November (hot and humid with frequent showers)

    • Dry season: December to April (hot, dry, and sunny) Average temperatures stay between 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F) throughout the year.

  • Natural features: Crisscrossed by rivers and canals, the city relies heavily on its waterways for trade, transport, and daily life.
